1. Description
In 2009-2010, under the Enhancement of Official Languages program, Promotion of Linguistic Duality component, Canadian Heritage will invest additional funds to support opportunities for young Canadians to have linguistic and cultural experiences in the second official language outside of school.

2. Type of activities and targeted recipients
Through grants and contributions to organizations working with youth or contributing to the promotion of linguistic duality, Canadian Heritage will support the organization of cultural and extracurricular youth activities that encourage the use of the second language or provide exposure to the second language outside of school. These activities may include cultural days or regular recreational activities in community centres that will be held entirely in the second language with some guidance; cultural exploration meetings using translated or bilingual cultural products; local language and cultural contacts between students from English and French schools in the same community by twinning Anglophone and Francophone classes; local thematic youth forums in the second language; or volunteer experiences in the second language. The anticipated results are

  1. Increasing linguistic and cultural experiences and opportunities for exchanges or contacts between English- and French-speaking young Canadians;
  2. Increasing the proportion of young Canadians who can express themselves in their second official language or who are interested in the culture conveyed by the other language.
Funding decisions will be based on available funds and analysis of the relevance of the proposals to the desired outcomes.
